Maestrie

The company without factory

En

Maestrie is a wide-ranging project focusing on a previously hidden dimension: the crafts know-how that lies behind the making of some of Foscarini’s most iconic models.

“Foscarini brings to life design and light ideas, the result of a freedom in research, expression and development, without any manufacturing constraints. Indeed, since it was established, Foscarini has been a company without a factory, one that is therefore free to explore materials and manufacturing techniques suited to develop every new idea, relying on the locally-sourced craft-based excellence” - Carlo Urbinati, Foscarini Founder and President.

This freedom makes it possible – and necessary – to explore the most appropriate materials and production methods for each new lamp, to imagine and develop every new idea in the best possible way. A fundamental contribution is provided in this sense by a network of artisans, extremely specialized experts scattered across the Italian territory, who enable the company to find, case by case, the best solutions that can lead to the completion of a new project.
A “system” in which Foscarini becomes a vehicle of value and meaning – placing itself virtually at the center between the creativity of designers, the production skills of suppliers and the market – to develop innovative, successful projects.

Maestrie shows Foscarini’s approach to the creation of new lamps.

Product design, a combination of aesthetic and functionality, leads the choice of both production processes and materials. In creating a new lamp Foscarini aspires to excellence, be it accomplished through an industrial or artisanal process.

Today the Foscarini catalogue includes: 32 designers, 19 materials, 48 finishes,18 technologies, 41 colours, 56 families of lamps, 212 different models Maestrie gives value to the know-how of the real people who make our products possible. “Sometimes ‘it can’t be done’ simply means ‘we’ve never done it before’. And for us, at Foscarini, since we want to always create innovative products, this is truly a positive way to begin” – Carlo Urbinati explains.

“When our production partners tell us ‘it can’t be done’, at Foscarini we immediately understand that we are on the right track”.

Maestrie is a photographic project by Gianluca Vassallo and Massimo Gardone, with critical contributions by Stefano Micelli and Manolo De Giorgi.

Maestrie project has involved many different professionals. The artist Gianluca Vassallo, who with his special sensitivity in the representation of the human component, has narrated what it means to “think with the hands”: to transform our perception of objects that come from the hands of artisans “into something alive, to establish a relationship between the universe of those who get their hands dirty, and that of those who don’t”.

The economist and university professor Stefano Micelli, who for over a decade has focused on the study of Italian know-how and the fertile contamination between crafts, the world of design and the global economy, as illustrated in one of his books, “Futuro Artigiano, L’innovazione nelle mani degli italiani”, winner of the Compasso d’Oro ADI prize. The architect Manolo De Giorgi, an expert on the Italian design system, curator of exhibitions and writer, who has investigated the relationship between crafts and design, also through new expressive media.
The photographer Massimo Gardone, who has set out to rediscover the handicraft aspects of photography, shooting still lifes of Foscarini lamps with an optical bench and b&w film.
“We asked them to represent the meeting between Foscarini, the designers and the expert craftsmen, the genuine wealth of Italian design Made in Italy”, states Carlo Urbinati.

“We are always fascinated by the extraordinary things that can be done by hand and by the fact that people too often forget how attractive and important they are”
